The government of Hungary is working to ensure the security of Hungarians in NATO at a time of war and amid the threats of growing migration pressure, Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky after a two-day Meeting of NATO Ministers of Defence in Brussels on Wednesday, 15 February.

The foreign minister said every effort must be made to avoid a direct armed conflict between NATO and Russia.

Hungary is on the side of peace, the return of peace into Europe as soon as possible is in the country’s interest, therefore our country calls for an immediate ceasefire and peace negotiations, the Minister of Defence announced in Brussels, after the two-day conference of the defence ministers of the NATO member states, on Friday, 14th October.

Between 1 August and 30 November with almost 80 soldiers and four JAS-39 Gripen fighters, the Hungarian Defence Forces take over the lead and contribute to the NATO Air Policing mission in the Baltic States, together with Germany, the Czech Republic and Italy.

NATO Defence Ministers concluded two days of preparations for the upcoming Madrid Summit on Thursday (16 June 2022). Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the Summit would address key areas including strengthened deterrence and defence; support for Ukraine and other partners at risk; a new NATO Strategic Concept; better burden-sharing and resourcing; and Finland and Sweden’s historic applications for membership.
